NPN (more commonly used) - The +ve runs through the base and into the emitter -ve that opens the collector and turns on the higher voltage. - To turn the transistor on The base has to be higher than the ground voltage ie. 1v PNP - The +ve runs through the Emitter and into the base -ve that opens the collector and turns on the higher voltage. Emitter is connected to the ground -ve. - To turn the transistor on The base has to be a lower voltage than the source ie. 8v

the first time after a long time we get here a fair comparison of NPN vs PNP. Only the base resistance and its resulting base current is a bit pesimistic and cause ober saturated transistor. 10kOhm will also do the job with a little less then 1mA. Thats not a pronlem for a BJT with a Beta of 100!
