A basic attempt to create  DC power supply. I have not tested it in a real circuit but I will. 

 The advantage of switching power supplies are size and efficiency.
These power supplies are very popular and will work in most applications.

Where's your flyback diode?

1st, the diode is facing the wrong way. 2nd, why a cap at the 555 output. 3rd, bad idea to drive a transformer with a 555, use a transistor.

The output diode I can slightly disagree with it being backwards, it would produce a voltage potential with 3 less volts than the current output, but it all depends on what reference you need
