assuming that the voltage source with a resstor at the top is a small solar panel and the source at the bottom is a battery, when the battery is charged over 5V and the solar panel is not colecting energy the zener diode allows the battery to waste energy through the solar panel avoiding the overcharge.

Coon hunters in U.S. midwest went to the bright LED headlamps for serious night lamps than burn for many hours per recharge and few use Calcium Carbine lamps now. Might work better for emergency prep kit.
