A simple way to picture two wire house telephone in the mind.  

Top SPDT switch is hook that lifts when we pick up headset and turns on dial tone from phone service.  Right coil is earpiece and resistor below is mouth piece.  Lamp is ringer which is AC signal from phone company during ringing and DC operation the rest of time.
