Are you trying to accomplish something real world?

Are you talking about something that can be accomplished with a monostable 555 timer?

Yes real world. Connect power, timing starts, when time limit is reached led turns on. When power is disconnected led goes off. The problem i am having is if power is disconnected before time is reached the capacitor still has a charge and the circuit acts as a retentive timer.

MattFerrie i tried the monostable 555 but it operates as on immediately then delay off.

Try using an inverter on the output

Just buy a TDOE relay. They should be cheap surplus.

Try this. Can't take credit, found it online somewhere and just diagramed it up here: http://everycircuit.com/circuit/6052668008300544
