The input stage is a common emitter bjt amplifier with a voltage divider to set bias. The second transistor acts as a gain stage. The output stage is a common collector amplifier to lower the circuits output impedance. The diodes at the end add extra hard clipping to the peaks of the distorted signal output from Q3's emitter. I've yet to breadboard this circuit but I'm looking forward to hearing it in action.
