disconnecting the motor from the source to open circuit causes it to coast or freewheel until it stops from friction. short circuiting the motor to itself causes it to brake. reversing the polarity through the motor for an impulse brakes faster

DC current can be used to brake motors but is momentary push button switch to brake motor speed.
