Ever since I heard of wire telephone I wanted to build one. This is a simple version with some amplification provided by transformers. If I could figure out how to make a carbon mike that produced AC it would work much better. http://gizmodo.com/barbed-wire-fences-were-an-early-diy-telephone-network-1493157700

Is the main run 1 wire or 2?

The main would be two lines (positive & negative) but one could be run through ground. For a full set you'll need three lines ; common negative/ground and one positive for each carrier.
