With additional latches you can get rid of the typical ripple carry hazards which happens every time the lower counter increments the upper one. http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5498720488521728

If I'm using an arduino I don't have to worry maybe but thinks that does work better

If your arduino have 8bits present at a single adr port, you can write the complete byte in one step. If bits are at different port adresses or modified even with SDK single bit operation, then you run while update values into the same problem as here with the counter carry overtake spike/hazard. Which arduino are you using/prefer, im curious?

I have not tried this circuit on it yet I was thinking doing spi to shift register

I used uno and due. Due does have already Dac's on board and fast 12bit
