For a purely inductive circuit the alternating voltage leads the current by 90o  or the current lags the voltage by 90o.

In a purely capacitive circuit the alternating voltage lags the current by 90o. or the current leads the voltage by 90o

I showed each with a different voltage and frequency so you see the differences on the oscilloscope.
