EC abuse moderation

@Igor, an administrator, has recently stepped in with an admirable effort to stamp out all spam, unpleasantness and vulgarity on EC. It is not before time, and not an easy task. Abused victims are now sometimes unfortunately blocked by Igor 'in the same breath' as the bad initiators, but personally I can accept that to some extent, in the hope that all nastiness including retaliation will cease. My appeal to you Igor at this time, is that you do not hand your good manual moderation entirely over to automation. Such automation will not stop unpleasant innuendos, or altered words like 'fu _ck'. Automated monitoring may also be damaging, in that a 'bad' person may report a great many complaints against a 'good' person ... This could lead to an automated block against that 'good' person where only an automated high number of complaints is considered. @Igor:   Please continue to overlook the moderation of EC and not rely on your forthcoming automated monitoring entirely. Finally, I think that we users should feel extremely privileged to be able to use such a masterpiece of electronic knowledge, incorporated with such high programming, graphics and user-friendly presentation. Many thanks to Igor and the team. Let's abide by this Igor philosophy here on EC:  If you don't like a presentation, then just ignore it and move on, rather than being unpleasant if you can not supply friendly and constructive help. If we don't... then we may be banned by the EC moderators who rightly set the standards for their site. Unkind opinions and disrespectful manner aimed at a person will almost inevitably cause trouble.

Well written @2ctiby. I have experienced your example of perpetrators all ganging together and reporting me for posting spam and other falsities. I’m hoping that the suspension consequently imposed on my account will be lifted soon. Meanwhile @Igor has silenced the regular bullying culprits and EC has experienced a peaceful atmosphere not experienced for many years. I have propagated the notion of ignoring users we disagree with or users circuit descriptions we disagree with, hopefully all members of the EC community will embrace the rights of everyone to use this app without being harassed and bullied by anyone regardless of the electronics knowledge.

I had also thought about this problem earlier. Insults can not only take place with exchange of vulgar phrases, but also in many other ways. But @Igor cannot always look out for such persons. Automation will help him but it would only be 25% useful as manual monitoring. I also hope that @Igor wouldn't leave it to the software...

I agree with you. Complete automation is probably beyond technology available to us. What we have in mind is that everyone in this Community should be able to report comments and once sufficient number of votes is received, the comment will be automatically blocked. I imagine that some community members will have more weight to their vote. Ultimately a single vote from an admin user may be enough. To summarize, there is no plan for full automation. It will be driven by votes from Community users and only the final decision will be automated. We'll see how it goes and adjust.

All i ask is that after the "automation" has started don't just leave it and say " it's going to take care of everything". After it has been integrated into EC please stay and see how community member respond it. Observe any flaws on the system and tally the number of people who are not happy with it and most importantly why they are not happy with it if there are any. Another thing is please do not dismiss the possibility that maybe when it's all set and done no matter what system comes into play on EC, it will still need human vigilance.
Igor

@Darklord122, certainly, as I said we'll see how it goes and adjust. And sure, there may still be a need for a human to be involved.

If the automation doesn't work rather allocate one person from y'alls company or whatever y'all are- to moderate and keep the peace on EC. I know it's time consuming and frustrating keeping peace between grown men acting like babies 🤦🏽‍♂️. So I suggest that the purchase amount of the app on the Appstore be SLIGHTLY INCREASED to an agreed upon amount by community members or set up a subscription plan to pay the "moderator" 10% or 20% of the of the original purchase amount of the app to pay him or her to keep the peace here because we just can't return to those dark days when people were bullied here until they made a new account. This is just my opinion of what plan B should be if this new Automation doesn't work.

I too am thankful Igor has stepped in. I have been guilty of inappropriate comments, of which I am ashamed, without using vulgar words. No one likes to be ridiculed by spam or being called names or even snide remarks about whether a circuit is "crap" or "fun". I hope we return to when I joined in March of 2014 and open technology based critique was used . Thanks Igor for the outstanding app and many of us wish you well in bringing it to a greater level!

Fortune, you wish to shower Igor with dollars? Don't be silly; a subscription fee of 20% is intolerable!!!
Darklord122

Yeah 🤔🤔. Now that I think about it's way too high. But I did say an agreed upon amount or rate by the community.
fatcat2

Only a minority of the users will agree. Check the ratings/comments section in playstore. You would see that most of the people are annoyed with the present pricing itself.

💔🤔sorry man my bad. I didn't think of that🤦🏽‍♂️

I also think that there should be no community moderation fee. What can make a difference is Community service where a few cool-headed users will actively report inappropriate comments.

Is there a sort of an application process or election for this? Because if there is please sign me up 📋🖋🙋🏽‍♂️

In this post the author place himself and his friends in the " right side" of the past quarrels, easily absolving themselves of any past guilt. Others, now and just only now that igor appears, aspire to become active reporter of inappropriate comments or just delators. In the meanwhile, it's no clearly defined what is "appropriate" and what is not, except for the explicit personal attack using insults. So, it exist an ample margin of discretion in judging and this is a not good thing. For example, the concept "ignore the project you not like" is not a good thing when that project is wrong or wrongly described, if one of the scopes of community is the diffusion of a correct knowledge. Would it be a inappropriate comments even if without any use of insult? Is not easy to be a judge when this isn't our job.

You’re missing the point. It isn’t the responsibility of anyone to post their opinions about the correct functionality of every circuit published here on EC. Furthermore, some uses do not offer their “technical advice” to the vast majority of uses, they only target a few users ensuring they post their version of “critique” on every circuit they publish. What’s obviously escaped your attention is the fact that a lot of circuits that are published daily are “fun circuits” and anyone with a scant knowledge of electronics with know this and move along. Finally, if a user politely asks another user not to post their “critique” or comments on their circuits then we, as a community, should respect that request and move along!
giomix

I think that your point of view about the use if the community tab will reduce it (and already it start to be) like one of the thousand gamers forums, few real exange of tech explanations between users and a lot of non tech comments and many "nice project, happy to see you, thanks to share and so on", It makes me feel like being at my wife's hairdresser. What does not escape to my attention is that exist some users who feel be targeted forever when they discuss with some other. For which reason a user needs to ask to not post polite tech critique to another user?
digital_electronics
The reason is called RESPECT. You need to RESPECT a users wish POLITELY asking you not to post your “critique” or comments on their circuits.
wyoelk
Just as asking a user to not post comments should also apply to users who request that fun circuits or class assignments not be posted but saved as private or unpublished. _ _ _ I would request to Igor to have a "new tab" for fun circuits and class assignments. _ _ _ Then users can pick and choose what to see and most negative critiques would probably go down substantially if not disappear.
digital_electronics
Point taken although how many tabs do you think @Igor would need to address every possible scenario? A much simpler and more common sense approach would be to ignore users circuits and circuit descriptions that you don’t necessarily agree with. And most importantly, to respect a users polite request for you not to post your critique or comments on their circuits.

Many people don't realise what is going on here. I don't see a need for enhancing moderation at all. This is one of the most troll-free communities, even thought some here use the word "troll" wrong. I don't think anyone here has bad intentions, they just have a different opinion at some topics.
Igor

Just wanted to say thank you - this discussion is useful and all points of view are valid. The immediate goal is to make the Community a safe place. The purpose of the Community tab may evolve once everyone feels welcome here.

Yessss! FINALLY.. Thank you Igor. No longer do we have to endure the comments section of every single circuit being filled with completely unwarranted hate and petty back and forth.

LeButch.. your previous comment was stated sarcastically right? Hurz and a few others harrassed lenzrulz relentlessly and in defiance because there was no moderation at the time to prevent him from being bullied non-stop, lenz eventually went from doing his best to ignore those individuals and started to spam "civil guidelines" that should be followed in response to each one of their absolutely absurd comments. Their back and forth spread across nearly every circuit that was posted. It's been out of hand for quite a while.
LeButch
Again, this harassment was not done by bad intentions. Hurz wanted to stop Lenz from reposting his circuits, which got Lenz to repost his circuits even more. I know that Hurz is not a really social person, but what he did was nothing like bullying. He did this not for fun, but to improve the community.
digital_electronics
You’re joking right? The facts are @hurz has been engaged in bullying behaviour for six years. Unfortunately, some users, such as yourself, excuse his behaviour citing good intentions or personality norms but some users stood up to him holding him accountable for his behaviour. There is evidence that he has posted frivolous, obnoxious and condescending comments on virtually every circuit of users such as @lenzrulz who venomously opposed his behaviour. He is also a renowned stalker once again posting frivolous, obnoxious and condescending comments on his opponents circuits. When cornered with the facts, he resorts to lying accusing those who present the facts as being “charlatans” and “liars”. He has been wrestling for control of the EC forum for years by demanding user’s comply with his idea of how the app should be used dismissing the notion that users paid for this app and wish to use it as they please. Under his vision, expressing your opinions are strictly forbidden and “newbies” are considered electronically naive unable to think for themselves therefore needing an electronic saviour to dictate biased knowledge to them. Dissent from his views isn’t tolerated. Such intolerance is met with extreme bullying, circuit stalking and harassment, from that moment, every circuit they post is immediately hi-jacked by his defamatory comments. He has attracted some likeminded individuals who thrive on conflict and some who oppose his views but choose not to buck the “status quo” so that they can happily fly beneath his radar, I’m sure he knows who they are and is probably empowered by their decision albeit the wrong decision. Peace here on EC would have been an illusion, given the dictatorial aspirations of @hurz and the support from likeminded individuals, if @Igor hadn’t intervened. Ignoring users they don’t like and bypassing users circuits and/or users circuit descriptions they don’t like simply wasn’t an intelligent option for these troublemakers.

To those who have lost vision of Igor's statement, "The immediate goal is to make the Community a safe place. The purpose of the Community tab may evolve once everyone feels welcome here." This is not a place to campaign for someone who got themselves suspended or commit identity fraud. It is impossible to ignore countless, at on time 27 class assignments in a row on ohms law or 11 repostings of the same circuit of a flip flop in a row by the same user. Lets contribute solutions, not campaign speeches or mud slinging at another active user.
wyoelk
I doubt countless tabs are needed as much as perhaps a set of guidelines for new users to not post class assignments as public but in an Educational/learning section where they can learn from each other AND where more knowledgeable users can go and answer questions if they wish. For those who want to just be entertained a way to publish the circuit flagged as "Entertainment" then it would be easier to ignore by serious users.
digital_electronics

Serious users definitely don’t endorse armchair psychology. And you’re right, many uses were using this app as a platform to launch attacks against anyone who chose to use the app, which they paid for in ways which they found displeasing. And the argument about the repetitious posting of circuits which use the same commonly available components is moot. Moving along, let’s hope that EC becomes a platform where anyone can feel free to express their creative ideas.

@Igor, I don’t think it’s necessary to spend any more time and money on the present app because it does its job really well. As you said earlier, this app was optimised for smart phone’s therefore it obviously has limitations. It might be an idea for you to develop an app exclusively for PC which would cater for advanced users. This would enable you to use a larger canvas and also offer a much broader range of components.
digital_electronics
Advanced uses have expressed their frustration when using the app owing to it’s limitations so creating a tab on this app exclusively for advanced users would only create a niche club which could potentially lead to a very similar toxic atmosphere which existed here for many years. What I mean is that there are approximately 10 users who consider themselves as being advanced users. These 10 users have historically bullied other users they considered to be electronically inept. An impartial moderator would need to work very closely with users on this level to ensure that no one is being victimised or bullied by anyone.
giomix

Instead of speak only about bullies, what about those users who diffused wrong copied circuits, posing as teacher and refusing any advices? I'm not referring to any of us of course.
digital_electronics

There is no evidence of anyone posing as teachers or whatever you may imagine and no one is obligated to take advice from anyone. You were also advised not to post provocative comments or you will be reported!

@Digital_Electronics What caused you to bring up armchair psychology? And I was talking about solutions to what you presented as a problem of helping users to efficiently ignore certain types of circuits. I still pose the same question of how to help users easily" ignore countless, at on time 27 class assignments in a row on ohms law or 11 repostings of the same circuit of a flip flop in a row by the same user." What is your solution?
wyoelk
@digital_electronics, Please list that group of elite users starting with the user who bullied me, by threatening me harm, calling me names, saying I was a certain woman's piece of apparel. The Igor should suspend that bully, right? _ _ _You see, again I seek for solutions to help ALL users who want to see only what they want, you want fun, some want classwork, some advanced circuits and some a little of each. Why are you trying to stir up contention again. Isn't that like a suspended user did? Just please offer a simple solution without campaigning or slinging mud.

We are in the process of putting together Code of Conduct for Community. The first revision will aim at making the Community a place free of any personal attacks. At the current volume of daily circuit submissions I think the issue of homework and similar circuits is not as urgent as making the Community a safe and welcoming place.
digital_electronics
@wyoelk, a brief visit to @lenzrulz’s circuits will reveal your psychology comments directed at @lenzrulz because he refused to abide by a mandate that has been forced upon him by the usual 10 troublemakers. It’s all there for everyone to see including the usernames of all 10 troublemakers. Somehow ignoring certain users circuits or their circuit descriptions seems an impossibility to the regular troublemakers. I have nothing further to add to this discussion and in terms of my solution, I have made a few recommendations if you bothered to read my previous comments. It’s so unfair that @Igor is left to clean up the mess made by troublemakers who refuse to respect the rights of community members to use this app, which they paid for, as they please.

@Digital_electronics, 1st, obviously you can't, er won't follow what Igor posted "Can we please keep the discussion focused" and continued on a unrequested rant. 2nd it was about a suspended user who got himself suspended. Not by any campaign requesting that happen. 3rd my psychological training is well documented in not one or two but three major universities. 4th your solutions have been tried and failed for years so lets move to current times
wyoelk

And two months of membership to read six years of posts! @digital_electronics, Are you really lenzrulz using a different username?
digital_electronics

I’ve kept the discussion focused and also notice how everyone else who is interested in keeping the community safe from troublemakers have likewise remain focused. Any deflection from the discussion was the result of the usual troublemakers making comments which required a response to set them straight. @lenzrulz never got himself suspended, such a ludicrous suggestion has been propagated by the usual troublemakers. Psychologists, as I’m sure you’re aware, recognise the dangers that bullying presents to not any individuals but to a community as a whole. Given your extensive experience, I found it bewildering that you were part of the problem as evidenced by your apologies on no less than three occasions. My solution echoes @Igor’s solution which is to bypass and ignore users that we don’t get along with or who’s circuits and circuit descriptions we don’t agree with. This isn’t rocket science but it is a commonsense approach and only iEC’s notorious troublemakers find such a solution problematic. Enough said!
