I tried this schematic without thinking if this could be made in real life. It's energy efficient with low power to be paid! Any ideas?

Sure it works in real life, it is galvanically isolated too. To do not pay energy when led turned off you have to insert switch before transformer. Exist very little plastic insulated transformer, very low power, i use them to have separated power for chinese digital voltmeter/ammeter you can find on ebay at two dollars

Of course it is possible not use transformer and use a capacitor and a diode to drop voltage from 220 vac to 5 vcc, but it is not galvanically isolated

What the difference in efficiency?

If efficiency is measured in terms dissipation of energy (there are no mechanical energy involved), a minor number of components

.. it means more efficiently. So seems better capacitor and diode

But it also depends from efficiently of each component too of course, in terms of electrical machine and how is used in schema.

Take a look at the switch! I scratch my head when I turn on the circuit...

Oh I increased the resistance in order not to burn the led!
