In practice a couple of low power CMOS 555s will reduce this.

any idea how I can make the duty cycle linearly proportional to the duty control? It appears to be an exponential relationship

Hi Robert, yes these 7555 timers are great, I bought a few last year and they make using timers a reality rather than just here on EC due to the different battery drain. @dooperman: not sure, but a log potentiometer might be worth a try...or a little messing with a second linear pot as here for fine tuning http://everycircuit.com/circuit/6620239840411648
