Blinking light fail

I'm trying to build a small board that has a blinking infrared light. I just installed this app this morning. I have a little soldering experience but I don't know very much about what is on a circuit board. I just recently decided I'm going to start learning more about the little parts. The goal of this project is to place a blinking infrared light inside a waterproof transparent container that I can see with my night vision camera.

If you want your circuit to work, the voltage must be at least 5 volts or the LED will not light, and you also need a 555 timer in order for the LED to blink. It's quite tricky and it took me a while to figure it out, but I think you might benefit from looking at my blinking indicator circuit.

Give this circuit a try http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5262863030026240. It only uses 2 transistors and operates over quite a wide voltage range. Replace LED with your infrared one.
