No, you are only working with a center tapped transformer, but you are using a 4 rectifiers bridge instead of only 2 to have the identical double-wave rectification effect.

I added an ammeter so you can see the pulsing charge current. What is curious is if you remove the transformer ground wire, the output voltage goes to zero.; it should not.

Changing the center-tapped transformer with a non-center tap version didn't work. Removing the ground connecton from the primary did not work either, but should have.

No, it works perfectly using non-center tapped version. Switch ground from center tap to negative output, using spdt and you can see nothing change. Ground it's only a refer point. http://everycircuit.com/circuit/4604090174406656
