Version 3.0: positive sinusoidal output Start the simulation with the switch to the cap open. Run at 10 micro sec. Watch the pattern for a few cycles, then close the cap switch, and run at 200 micro sec. As i recently discovered, this is nearly identical to an Armstrong oscillator. But its still cool to smooth the output. Let me know what you guys think.

Think of the joule theif circuit like a voltage booster, or pump. The conservation of energy is preserved, so your still using the same wattage to run an LED, your just able to do it from a much lower voltage source. This also means you will kill that 1.5 v battery at a faster rate then normal. However, considering this circuit was originally built to run on so called "dead" batteries, i guess any account of time you get is above and beyond just throwing them out!

The capacitor is optional. In the simulator, the wave form comes out smoother. In practically building this circuit, you don't need it. At these frequencies, the human eye can't see the LED flicker.

Wow 60khz and you are practically able to fry the led (well thats what the apps shows). This would drain the battery very fast. But the oscillator part is perfect.

Try playing with the mH value, of the transformer, and/or the resistance value on the base of the transistor. Sim speed as well

Thank you for making this restart button. Could you rename it to 'Force stop'? ^^

My LG optimus runns it ok. Put a 50 Ω resistor in series with led to limit the current spike. Ive built this circuit exactly the way it is here, it works in real life. About 3 hrs on a low battery, almost 8 on a full battery

It crashed on me as well. 😳. Check out my joule theif 2.0 then. It did not crash on me
