Just like how you would subtract two numbers from fourth grade. This circuit does it the same way but in binary.

We can make a switchable adder/subtractor using XOR gates.

somethin wrong somewhere ... when i try 8-1 or 1-8 none return 7... but works for 8-4

@Mohit_Heamaprased, I'm really sorry for the late reply. I was sick with fever. Now it's OK. Subtraction is basically taking the 2's complement and adding. This function is performed by an XNOR gate. Use it. With this, you can make a switchable adder/subtractor. As easy as that.
