high drive current required to overcome the capacitance across drain-gate and gate source. higher drive voltage is required to get the Vgs high and sustain it. any small amount of line inductance causes oscillations with the capacitance. play with the component values and see the effects, then go back and look at some real drive circuit setup and you'll understand why they're so complicated https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.radio-sensors.se/download/gate-driver2.pdf&ved=0ahUKEwiq057kvuPPAhVK4GMKHZKyBm0QFggjMAA&usg=AFQjCNGXjH1nrf9RweiH58lOxKj-kwSsyA&sig2=7xaV8IY4fiCsv6Dnoq7f0g

One of the most instructive presentations I've seen for a long time...thanks.....interesting to see that the gate capacitors produced a potentially damaging gate current on your oscilloscope....nice link too.
