Cheap Chinese Trick

If you always assume a red wire is positive and black wire is negative when connecting power to a device.  You may get surprised that black turns out to be positive and the red wire is negative.

A repairman on the Internet was starting to run into this " cheap Chinese trick".

Yes one should be very aware of the colour & polarity of appliance wiring, in some countries red is the earth wire. In America black is the active wire.

I am from Scotland ( UK ) and it took me awhile to get my head around black being the live wide but I seen this little handy suggestion from an electrical engineer in the U.S.

It went : Black is the colour of death so it's the live wire, white is a neutral colour hence it's neutral and green is the colour of what grows on earth, hence it's the earth wire.
