Thanks, i was trying to show three states - fully charged, almost full and flat. Do you know how i tell how much the circuit would drain itself? And is it reasonably efficient?

While charging the green LED is in dangerous to blowup. And 9V zener is probably hard to get in real. Try 9.1V. One more tipp, dont forget to ground floating transistor input before zener voltage is reached. Otherwise you get false indications.

Thanks. Made some changes, connected transistor input to ground via 10k - is that right?
