Maybe the best way for make this type of circuit is create parallels series of LEDs, because they are like a zeners and limiting the maximum voltage and in parallel they help each other to absorb all the current that giving the first capacitor in the primary circuit (470nF in this case). This is the reason why not melt 6x2 volts series LEDs.
