60kHz?

Redrawn, updated the nominal values and added a basic smoothing circuit for ripple comparison. http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5677446920404992

@billy 1uH of inductance is ineffective at 50/60hz, you might as well remove is

@PrathikP, a small value capacitor is normally placed across a zener.

I'm not talking about the capacitor across the zener. I'm talking about the 1uH inductor. If the mains frequency were something like 100khz or higher, the 1uH inductor would be useful, but at 50hz the 1uH inductor is a dummy component. Trust me.

Or don't trust me. Remove the inductor and see the difference for yourself.

@PrathikP with 1uH there was almost no change at all. That is why a 100uH inductance was used. Not much change either (just ~100mV) and kind of inefficient, but a little change nonetheless.

... and still, 60kHz?

@jtt that's exactly my point. 1uH or 100uH, inductors are crap at 50/60hz. Scrap it altogether.

I take your point, circuit updated.

@Robert_Kidd As I'm still learning these basics I wasn't able to steady the frequency. It instead stays at 120Hz and depending on the time lapse analyzed it changes a bit from 83Hz then 9x Hz and then 120Hz. But such time window is so small that I think such freq change may be a bug?

@BillyT your updated circuit is the exact example I have been looking for on the usage of zeners and transistors under this context. Nice!!

@jtt, sorry if I misunderstand you, you have complete control over the frequency. Highlight source by touching it, click on spanner symbol then rotate dial down from 60kHz to 60Hz.

@Robert_Kidd No problem!! Thanks to your comment I realized I've mistankenly set the freq to KHz instead of Hz as originally intended. Circuit updated!! Thank you!!
