Showing how a npn transistor can be used  has a switch with a very current going to the base and larger current flow to light the led between the collector and emitter. This can be scaled up depending on what size transistor you use to switch bigger loads such as car nlight bulbs

problem with this is it relies on the transistor to limit the current to the led.

use the wrong resistor on the base pin and you get a fried led

To be fair the same also applies if you use the wrong current limiting resistor in series with the led, or pretty much any wrong component.
