You burn all the power across the diodes. The poor rectifier diodes do even drop 8V in forward direction. Silicium diodes might drop 2V maximum in forward, but 8V????????

Oh ouch! It does. I added a couple of resistors, but all I got was the feeling that I have no idea what I'm doing! It still burns just as much power across the diodes. I really ought to find another book on electronics, or apply fungicide to the (very nicely written) book I've owned for years, and work my way through it. -- BTW it's 'silicon' in English.
