It works but why do you use 2 voltage sources ?

The 5 volts emulate a logic source. It just made more sense at the time.

Replace the 1k resistors with 10k, this will reduce heat and increase reliability and efficiency.

Why should this not work? It's basically a transistor switching between cutoff and saturation, thus acting like a simple switch.

rich11292000 made a good suggestion and you could also increase the 100 resistor next to the LED to drop its current below 20mA as a general rule to avoid burning it out.
