You must flip the emitter and collector of the transistor. And makes this automatic?

You can test it with both

The basic idea behind this circuit has merit, check the AC voltage levels. As PrathikP says the transistor is wired back to front and if wired correctly the diode needs reversing. The base resistor could be larger than the selected device, and a pull down resistor would ensure positive relay drop out. A 12V relay nominally pulls in at around 6V and drop out at about 5V, check specs for coil resistance etc. http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5081276072329216
