BTW, is 555 a must? You will need comparators anyway and with comparators you can build nice triangle generators. If I have to make PWM, the mostly without 555. Ok here one more 555 ramp http://everycircuit.com/circuit/6344623109963776

the reason I use 555 is, I have only one comparator in my parts box and it is necessary for pwm.
