This is a series of latches, representing doors or windows, combined with a transistor. If any latch is opened then the transistor allows current flow to the LED indicating a break in the circuit. Can anyone guess why this works?

Just a question of current flow, the loop with the switches carries more resistance (10K ohm) but when opened, the transistor base is saturated by the lower resistance loop (600 ohm) which in turn illuminates the LED.
