Trying to make it... Can someone explain plz: 1) why did I have to put a ground at the load (if not, the circuit gives an error) 2) why the voltage starts low and goes up so slowly??

EC needs a reference point to show the voltages. That's why a ground is necessary. Dont use a common ground for the DC and AC sources. Diodes have ohmic resistances (bulk). Because of the large cap, the voltage takes time to build up as it is charging. Lower the value of the cap and put an additional resistor for limiting surge current.

Thanks for replying! Lowering the cap makes it look better indeed... Now I wonder if this voltage curve is alright for DC, or can we make it smoother?

A common way of presenting this circuit is shown thus, the unnecessary resistor is removed and replaced by a PI filter using lower value capacitors. Check the use of the resistor tagged to lock in the 0V & 0 current points. http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5453157860376576

Use an LC filter cuz the inrush current will be limited in that case.

Looks much better, thanks! Still much to read and learn here.
