This is not the problem. As far as i know a metal detector works with two coils coupled together in the way that each one cancel the other unless a peace of metal change the form of the magnetic field and one of the two coils win on the other emitting a sound via a speaker.

Yes but there are also single coil metal detectors

Which operates in almost the same way, the coil emitt a magnetic field via an LC oscillator. Near to a metal peace the frequency change change and it is compared to another fixed frequency. Thoose two signals summed together created an audio signal.

The problem is that in this circuit you found the oscillation stop after a short period of time and it shouldn't to that.
