This circuit includes a bypass capacitor and resistor in the emitter feedback allowing for an increase in AC gain while not effecting the DC bias, the voltage gain is then roughly Rcollector / ( Remitter || Bypass ) The input impedance is however reduced so care needs to be taken in selecting the bypass resistor, high gain also increases distortion products so using multiple low gain stages is often better than a single high gain stage.

Its almost unresponsive to low frequencies. You should incrrase the emitter cap to at least 100uf and even higher for wider frequency response. The same should be done to the input and output decoupling capacitors.

You're right those caps are too small for a 1kHz signal, I have now increased them.
