A circuit in an article listed this for testing watch and other crystals.  Where the voltage source is located is where the crystal should be inserted.

This is for 32,768 Hz crystal. The crystal looks like a tuning fork and is laser cut and precision lapped to vibrate at 32,768 Hz.

Larger crystals may need 5 volts or so to oscillate.
