I think I broke EveryCircuit.

You did not. What you see there is called self inductuion. The magnetic field around the coil collapses and induces a current in reverse direction. This current can not flow anywhere, so there is a voltage spike at the coil. This is used in jool thiefs to create high voltages. http://everycircuit.com/circuit/6110483478478848
