Diode isn't needed. Add an led with a 330ohm resistor and blinkie away

The de-energising of the relay coil, as with any coil, causes an electromagnetic field collapse which induces a high voltage into the coil; the flywheel diode shorts out this voltage, ergo preventing it from damaging other circuitry.
