thevenin short if switch is closed

Could someone tell me if I am correct on finding Rth i.e Thevenin? The bottom circuit is a prior problem that I had and it checked out when the switch was closed. I used it to act as a short. I calculated R thevenin to be 20 ohms. The resistor not connected would be the load. Also could you explain to me why when shorted on the bottom circuit the parallel branch is skipped but on the top when shorted it is not. Is that because the resistance is more than the 20 ohm so it is going to take the path of least resistance?
