Time to call sweetheart for some sparkin. First lift receiver to make sure no one else is on the line. Now do like on TV. Left hand holds receiver (earpiece or 100 ohm resistor) on holder (latch hook) pulling down which keeps TWO left side switches open, the top left and the left battery switch. Right hand is cranking 20 Hz. at 80 - 100 volts A. C. Magneto (push button) to send ring signal (light bulb) at her house. One long and two shorts so she knows it is her call. On party line all phones except calling phone rings. After ring signal, lift earpiece off latch hook to listen (close left top switch, close left battery switch) Sweetie picks ear piece up at her house so close right top switch, close right battery switch. Talk (send 500 Hz. signal through transmitter, 20 uf capacitor, to her)," My Radiant Dove............My River of Love........etc. ". You disconnect 500 Hz. to pause. Her que to send 700 Hz. signal from right side," Yes My Prince! Anything you want!". So you can talk back and forth. When Lonely Hearts or Old Maids listen in sign off until they go to bed. Sweet thing puts earpiece on latch hook so open top right switch, open right battery switch. Hang up on your end, open top right switch, open right battery switch.

Damn, them old-timers had it rough! Nowadays, I could pick up my cellphone, and press just one mechanical switch and from there simply tell my phone to video-call my GF who's on the other side off the planet on biz. In no more than 5 seconds and with an energy expenditure of less than 200milli-calories, the desire to see my girl shake her booty for me is manifest into reality. Heh- switchboards, operators, rotary dials..... cave drawings!..

And they thought they had it good! Imagine what will be, state of the art, in the next 25, 50, 100 years.
