Responsible adult supervision is needed on dangerous spark projects. 
A very flexible power inverter circuit. Two 2N3055 transistors, two resistors 1K to 2K, either 6.3 or 12.6 to 117 volt center tapped transformer.  PNP transistor can be used in voltages are reversed.

You can also use DC, especially with tesla coils. I made one with a flyback driver, which hase a DC output, and it works great. About the Jacobs ladder it should work with DC, but I don't know.
