No current limiting resistor for the diode...?

It wouldn't work out well. Not with that 1M base resistor. It's so much resistance, the transistors are just barely turned on. Change that base resistor to something in the 1K to 10K range, then the transistors get saturated and turned on. In that case, you'll definitely be in need of some current limiting for the LED.
