An application of this circuit could be with a device that has two supplies and when the first one is not available, the second one (that could be a battery) replaces it, otherwise it stays unplugged.

Actually one diode do the same and u not suffer loses from resistor have only two terminals to solder and anydiode can be used. Ofcourse circuit became so simple that no one pay attention on such.

But with a diode both supplies would give power to the LED at the same time.. won't they?

No diode switch off circuit when u close button and impres higher voltage As sources are equal diode make steal from one typicall 0.7v so after diode we have 4.3v so when u impress full 5 volts polarity change at diode will be 4.3 - 5 = -0.7v and such is reverse so diode turns off blocking whole node and suply. Try using diode instead trannsistor
