Nice try, there is no need for the transistor. Remove it and lower the resistor to 100 it is also working

Yes but if the 5v is e.g. a microcontroller signal then it allows one to switch off the leds via the controller - right?

If you're wanting to control a 12V circuit with a microcontroller, this still isn't exactly how to go about it. I'll post an example. Look for a circuit called "For Drsabrown".
