I got the basic circuit idea from IMSAI guy on youtube, and modified the circuit to activate 5 transistors which could control 5 seperate devices at will by adjusting the potentiometer. Each transistor has emitter diodes for 'protection' but they most likely do not need them.
This may be the circuit im after for making simpler tone decoders for multichannel remote controls.
