I am a newbie here. Can anybody tell me any other way to create this effect without using two voltage sources.

Set the leds so they are reversed to each other and set your source to go from -2V to 2V, instead of 0V to 2V. Current will switch directions every cycle making only one led light up at a time.

An astable mutivibrator can be used as well. There are some very good examples on here and it allows you to use a dc source to obtain the effect. The theory behind it is a tad complicated for fresh newcomers but its a good challenge and they can be built readily from parts from salvaged electronics.

Yep. You could easily copy a schematic of an astable multivibrator from online or another user here (myself included, I've used then in a few of my circuits), but getting the concept is going to be s bit much for a newb. I second Mamish's suggestion. Set up an AC source. Anything more than 2V and you'll need resistors. Then wire up your two LEDs in parallel, but turn them opposite directions. That's about the simplest LED flasher there is.

You can also create a parallel circuit with an AC power souce.

AC source would be fine to use here as a demonstration of the effect, just don't go plugging a couple LEDs into a light socket and expect the same result- doesn't work like that irl..

I would actually like to see that. :P
