The RC circuit is used in order to avoid kick of voltage through the switch. The capacitor tries to steady the voltage (it opposes to voltage changes caused by the inductor).
This circuit is faster then freewheeling diode thanks the resistor in series the capacitor which help the current decaying.
RC snubber is also useful in case of AC source ,while diode will work only for DC because it conducts in half period in AC
