So basically you could replace the entire circuit with a 50kOhm resistor and get exactly the same. Why overcomplicate things?

What bryan mean is a voltage controlled current source. Replace the LED with a resistor and apply 1V instead of sawtooth. You get from 0 to ~70kOhm about 200uA constant current!

Yes, i mean what Hurz say, i'll probably use this circuit for a Current controlled oscillator , like the LM17800
