This is astable oscillator. T1 is time that is left output on and right output off, T2 is vice versa.We can set times T1 and T2 by changing values of capacitors. By changing left capacitor we adjust T2 and by changing right capacitor. Button is there to kickstart circuit because when we start simulation it is in balance but in reality that can't happen.

I like your circuit, it shows the basics of how to create an oscillator. Would you know a way of how to get rid of the spikes?

By slowing down the simulation, spikes are generated by imperfections of application.
