http://www.555-timer-circuits.com/motor-pwm.html Use a arduino or a 555 for pwm control using a constant voltage instead. A single pot is a primitive way of dimming.

You don't need help. You need prayer.

Please tell me what I’m doing that breaches EC’s terms of use?

Here I've made some changes. http://everycircuit.com/circuit/4929661579296768 In order to adjust the brightness of the lamp, you need to change the amount of current flowing through it. It can be done by using just a variable resistor (not recommended), a variable resistor and transistor and using PWM. I've used the second method in my circuit. By adjusting the potentiometer, the base current of the transistor is varied. That inturn varies the current flowing through the lamp, thus altering it's brightness.

Also, it's of no use to use an inductor in such a DC circuit. An inductor does not offer any resistance to the flow of a steady current.
