A simple input logic NOT gate can be constructed using resistor and transistor switches as shown below with the input connected directly to the transistor base.
if the input is logic 1 then the output is logic 0 and the LED will be turned off.
if the input is logic 0, then the output is logic 1 and the LED will be turned on.
