If the switch is opened that supplies the triggering pulse the timing cycle will be complete causing the 555 to change output states.

Interesting. Just a side issue here: It is a bad idea to let pin 7 of a 555 reach Pin 8' s V value. In reality a variable resistor/pot can often reach zero if moved to the far end, which means that this situation could easily occur. Your end value of 10 ohms is near that mark. In my opinion it is a good idea to place a reasonable fixed value safety resistor in line with a variable in order to avoid that situation.
