This is a demonstration of voltage regulation capability of a Zener diode.
The circuit is fed by a constantly varying voltage source. The voltage is too high, so you can see the LED blowing.
Toggle the switch to stabilize voltage, to start the Zener working. Now the voltage is quite stable and the LED is happy.
