Simple Zener diode voltage regulation

This is a demonstration of voltage regulation capability of a Zener diode. The circuit is fed by a constantly varying voltage source. The voltage is too high, so you can see the LED blowing. Toggle the switch to stabilize voltage, to start the Zener working. Now the voltage is quite stable and the LED is happy.

That's how they basically work. But look at the current through the zener. It's varying - a lot. If you minimize that variation too the voltage stabilization will increase - again a lot. From 200mV ripple it may fall to 1uV ripple.
