its shorting your AC source. Put a resistor on it

I dont really think you know how ANY diode work... It does not block current in forward direction, so you short the AC source half of a period.

I didn’t say I understood everything fully. Just the basic concept of the zener diode. I did realize it was shorting for half the wave. I’d never do this in practice. I don’t know enough yet to claim anything close to proficiency. Will update it to be more sound. Thanks for the advice though. I’m still learning
